Changing Your Focus

In this job market, sometimes we have to adjust our career slightly in the wrong direction to come out on top.

I have taken my career path back into marketing and graphic design in hopes that the commercial interior design market will bounce back within the next year. Taking out a few contracts to make some cash on the side and keeping myself busy is just what I need. Graphic design skills are also viable in this field. I'm also keeping my resume busy as well. Unexplained lapses on your resume is not always a positive thing to employers.

What are you doing while you're out there looking for the next job path?

AutoCAD 2010

Autodesk has already come out with AutoCAD 2010. I just started learning 2009!

Download a free 30-day trial version. I hope you can learn it before 2011 is released.

Semiramis Hotel - Karim Rashid

Once a day, I will try to feature a different, outstanding project with photos. I will highlight healthcare projects, offices, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, etc.

One of my favorite projects is the Semiramis Hotel in Athens, Greece. This is the first hotel project for architect, Karim Rashid. The lighting design, featuring custom made fixtures, by Focus Lighting, Inc won many awards: Lumen Award of Excellence, AL Light & Architecture Design Award, IESNA Award of Merit- IIDA
SLEEP.05 Award for Best Hotel Public Spaces, Finalist for the Best Lesiure, Retail, and Exhibition Lighting- FX Design Award.

webspace and email

I have a new weblink set up. The blog can be found at http://comminteriordesign.com rather than the blogspot address (slightly easier to remember and maybe will get a little more google traffic). I also set up an email address: contact@comminteriordesign.com

Feel free to contact me with any news, ideas, job inquiries, etc.

The Marketplace and Economy

I thought I would take some time to report how the furniture companies are doing, fiscally. I know many designers are out of work due to the failing industry:

"Herman Miller, Inc., today announced results for its third quarter of fiscal year 2009. Consolidated net sales for the quarter were $354.4 million, a decline of 28.5% from the same period last year and 25.6% from the prior quarter." Source: www.hermanmiller.com

"Steelcase reported revenue totaling $811.3 million for its third quarter of fiscal 2009, compared to $885.9 million in the prior year. Revenue declined 8.4 percent driven largely by declines of 11.4 percent in the North America segment and 14.8 percent in the Other category. As compared to the prior year, third quarter revenue was negatively impacted by approximately $(18) million from currency translation effects." Source: www.steelcase.com

Both companies have done a lot of restructuring among their human capital. Both of their "careers" section on their websites were void of any interiors/space planning positions.

NeoCon World's Trade Fair | June 15 - 17

City of Chicago, Merchandise Mart

Registration is happening now so, get on it!

I can't figure how they are doing seminar registration this year. I have to sign in as a student and there is no information on their website about seminars and events.

Stay tuned to http://www.neocon.com for more information as it comes available. Get your hotel as soon as possible. I recommend Hotel 71. The hotel is within walking distance to the Mart, the $$$ is unbeatable, and the accommodations are definitely worthy enough for an interior designer.

Hope to see you there at NeoCon!
